Oral Contraception

Commonly referred to as ‘The Pill’, women’s oral contraceptive tablets work to prevent pregnancy when taken once daily. They contain synthetic versions of the reproductive hormones oestrogen and progestogen across various doses.
There are 2 different types of contraceptive pill available, the combined pill and the ‘mini pill.’

The combined pill contains small amounts of oestrogen and progestogen which work in 3 different ways to prevent pregnancy:
  • prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg
  • causes the fluid from the Cervix to become thicker so decreasing the movement of sperm
  • prevents the thickening of the womb lining, stopping an egg from embedding
This multi-acting approach makes the combined pill one of the most effective forms of contraception.

The mini pill contains only progestogen, so it works slightly differently by preventing the sperm cell from entering the womb. Although effective, it can be less effective than the combined pill.
As well as its primary use of preventing pregnancy, the contraceptive pill can offer a variety of other benefits, including menstrual cycle control and an uninterrupted sex life.
The combined pill can make your periods lighter, keep your menstrual cycle regular (21 days taking the pill, then have a 7 day break) and reduces your risk of cancer of the ovaries, womb and colon.
The combined pill does however have increased risk of blood clots and can cause some side effects (especially at the start of treatment) including mood swings, weight gain and skin issues.
Even though less popular, the mini pill (progestogen only) is still preferred by a lot of women because you take it daily, being more convenient. As it doesn’t contain oestrogen, there are no increased risks of blood clots, it’s therefore suitable for women who don’t tolerate oestrogen and is safe to use when breastfeeding. It is less effective of the two styles of contraceptive and may cause some irregular or ‘breakout’ bleeding because there is no regular scheduled period.
